Sunday Best May 24 2012, 1 Comment
The whole world looks far more vibrant when in full color, when we step out in boldness, and when we pursue our visions to bring out our best. For me, this defines my passion for accessories design. I wanted to make accessories that speak to that inner self in all of us. The one that asks us to fight our fears and step out because the world needs to see it! One person who really inspired me because he was bold in his own best was Sunday Ibok!
For me it started last fall. Out of the blue I learned that a friend had suddenly lost his life after suffering a brain aneurism. And suddenly our community stopped and stalled with the ache of losing such a dear and loved friend. A full auditorium gathered to shared stories and celebrate Sunday Ibok's life, and in honor of his legacy- we dressed in our Sunday Best. Although I hardly knew him I found tears streaming down my face as I heard each friend share. We laughed, we cried. This man was a story maker! As a stylist, he knew how to dress well. He was fun and quirky and individual. Even though his career consisted of ad hoc adventures of making ends meet, I was inspired by his heart of generosity. It was seen in the time he weekly gave to a family looking after their kids. And it was seen when his roommates would discover he had given away his favorite pair of shoes because he learned that someone needed them more than him. He also had this lovely off-the-cuff way that put people at ease. His styling magic and personality granted him the comfort of warmly greeting friends and tweaking their clothes almost as a second thought. With a simple straighten of their collar he spoke of an underlying confidence in them. He saw their best and wanted to bring it out!
Inspired, I walked away. What could my best look like? Where was I not bringing it? In my leather class I decided to make a slogan cover for my daily organizer. I wanted my days to look different. I want to let the creativity rise in me- and with it I desire the generous spirit that Sunday so gallantly lived. Style is for today, but when he set that collar he saw the potential on the inside and flickered a glint of what was yet to come!
